This time I'm reviewing The Maker, a 5.30 minutes stop motion animation which is made by husband and wife Christopher and Christine Kezelos. So, this animation is their latest film after Zero (2010). The Maker has won more than 20 awards, which are the best animation, best film, best animated short, and more of them.

The Maker is really interesting, not just the animation, but the story itself. At the first time I saw its picture, I thought this is a horror one, so that's why I haven't review this animation. But, actually I'm running out of interesting short stop motion movie, when I scrolled down in youtube to find something interesting, I happened to find this animation again. So I thought to give it a try. And it is reallly good! I really recommend this movie for those who like creepy kind of feeling and also the sense of mystery is really strong here.

My review:
This is the story of a rabbit, not the cute kind of rabbit, his appearance is quite scary actually with his big brown eyes. His job is to make a new rabbit and he has to be able to bring life into it. He has an hourglass and he started to flip it and the time starts since then. He built the concepts of the new rabbit, gathering all the materials needed, mold them, put it in the oven, then do the final touch. Finally he finishes his new creation, which is a female rabbit with pink outfit. Whatever he does, he can't manage to bring this female rabbit to life, she is just like a doll sitting at the corner of the room. The male rabbit tries to get her read a book with him, teaching her, but everything seems useless. Then, he looks at the hourglass, which indicates that the time almost reach its limit. Immediately he grabs his classical music sheet book and play the violin. As he plays the classical music, the female rabbit slowly starts to stand up and approach him. Her sparkling blue eyes are finally opened, which is dead before. Both of them hug each other, giving the female rabbit the classical book which the male one used before. The last sand in the hour glass finally touch the bottom of it, it is time the male rabbit has to go. His body turns into coloured dust grains and disappear leaving the female rabbit holding his last gift. The story ends there.

The moment where the male rabbit vanishes is so emotional and touching. I never thought that the story will end up like this, it would be nice if both of them are be able to be together. But, just after that scene as well, I know now why this animation is called The Maker. Every new rabbit who just given the life to, he or she is actually the next generation whose given the responsibility to make a new rabbit which later on can continue their generation. That is why it is called The Maker. The sets are full of details and the animation is really smooth as well. I give 5 out of 5 for this animation.

(The details level are totally amazing, even to the smallest things, such as the small bottles which are filled with colours)

About the animator and producer:
Christopher Kezelos was graduated from Sydney University with BVA degree in film production. Ever since then, for more than a decade he has been working as a writer, director, and producer. He also opened up his own studio which called Zealous Creative, where he does his production stuffs. In 2010, Christopher animated Zero, which turns out to be a pretty big success, after being screened in 50 festivals and got 15 awards from it. I will review Zero on my next post. The Maker is his most top stop motion film he has done so far, which is shown in 60 festivals and received 22 awards from it.
