The Sea Is Blue Stop Motion Short Movie Review

Image result for the sea is blue

This 8 minute short stop motion film tells the story of a young girl who falls down into the ocean who finds that ocean is a totally new different world which she thought it to be scary. It is how ocean got its colour. A touching background of this movie lays on Vincent Peone sister's life experience who was is in coma 10 years before and this animation is a message for her. Vincent Peone himself is an award winning writer and director who was born on 19th January 1984 and has been collaborated with his friend called Josh Ruben in making several films and animation.

The Sea is Blue is produced by //kneeon studios, an animation studio focusing on stop motion and 2D animation based in Brooklyn, New York. //kneeon has created animated content for Oreo, MTV, Toshiba, and other clients. It took around 7 months in //kneeon to finish this animation with collaboration with Gloo Studios and two 3D animators such as Jamil Lahham and Spencer Noble. So the technique that is being used in making this animation is using 3D facial animation into the stop motion footage with 2D animation for the finishing.

My review:
The Sea Is Blue is a touching short animation which looks simple but has a deep meaning behind why the animation is made. It is the story of a girl named Bean who is accompanying her grandpa fishing in the middle of the sea. She is busy playing with her dolls and suddenly one of them fell down into the sea which lets her lost her balance and drown. Her grandpa, who is facing the opposite of her doesn't realise about it until he hears a "splash" sound then he quickly run over to  figure out a way to save her.
As deeper and deeper Bean being pulled down by the sea, she is approaching the unknown dark world of the ocean, where all the predators are living. At first, Bean was so scared being stranded down in the middle of no where surrounded by darkness. Not longer than that, a lanternfish comes and approach her along with the other deep sea creatures. Bean starts to feel more comfortable with her new surroundings as she plays and has fun with all of them. She is getting an electric shock from an eel, having coffee with the starfishes, and other valuable memories. After spending quite some time with her "sea creature" friends, an anchor falls down and Bean realises that it is the time for her to go back to her world. In deep sadness, she cries, as well as the other creatures who cry which in this animation shows how the sea becomes blue.
Bean's grandfather who managed to rescue her is so grateful that he hasn't lost her yet.
Based on my opinion, the animation is quite smooth for stop motion and they put a lot of attention in the details as well, such as the corrosion texture on the boat and the rocks in the sea. The story is simple yet satisfying. I absolutely recommend this movie! At first I didn't really understand what the story is, but after doing some research on the movie's background I finally understood.

Movie Background:
The story behind this animation is the life experience of Vincent and his sister of a tragic accident they had before. Vincent says that The Sea Is Blue has been a passion project for him for a long time. It all started around ten years ago when he woke up knowing that a fire has destroyed his childhood home leaving both of his sisters in severe condition. His youngest sister Angelina recovered quickly from her injury, but Diana, the oldest one still suffered on a third degree burnt which covered 68% of her skin. While waiting for her in the hospital room from a drug-induced coma, Vincent wrote the story of The Sea Is Blue beside her bed which be able to comfort him.

Movie Techniques:
95% of the animation is stop motion, but as I said before that //kneeon collaborated the animation with 2D, you can see especially the part when Bean and the other sea creatures cry, the tears are totally 2D animation. And there is one more scene when Bean is getting an electric shock from an eel, the electric effects is also 2D animation.
After learning about this, I finally learnt that stop motion films are not limited to just stop motion, but we can mix it with 2D and 3D animation to make some of the effects even better. In the future, I would like to collaborate stop motion and 2D as well.
