Plot: It is the story of a young girl named Coraline who just moved in to a pink palace apartment with her parents. She is unhappy about her life as her parents seem to ignore her all the time. Unexpectedly she finds a secret door which leads her to a whole different world.

I've seen quite a lot of Coraline's movie posters back then when I was a kid, and I thought it is a scary horror movies and just the same as another cartoon movies, so I'm not interested at all. Until several days ago, when I was scrolling on my phone searching for a nice movie to watch, suddenly Coraline appeared. I thought to give it a try and I like it a lot!

Coraline is the older stop motion animation version of Kubo and Two Strings which was released 7 years before. I admit that the animation is not as smooth as Kubo, nor the quality is better, but the story line and how does the animator being able to move the character becomes so alive amazed me. They still payed a lot attention in the details, especially the scene when Coraline is escaping from her "fake mother".

My review:
Coraline is the first stop motion animated puppet which is filmed in 3D. The animation itself is the combination between old fashion stop motion and digital 3D animation.

The story starts when Coraline Jones and her parents have to move to a cramp apartment called Pink Palace which is located far from the city and is quite isolated. Both of her parents are so busy doing their work and they dont have time to fulfill her nagging. After strolling her new home, Coraline accidentally finds a small secret door near the living room. This makes her so curious and she promises to her mom that as long she gives her the key for that door she will keep silent. But, only walls exist behind that door and Coraline is so disappointed.

The night after, Coraline is waken up by several mice running through the hall way which seems like they are asking her to follow them. The mice lead her to the small door which is a secret passage to the other side of her life. There she finds exactly the same surroundings as her home, but with a nicer atmosphere where she can finds a lot of delicious food. She meets with her other mother and other father who have the same appearance with her true parents. She only finds it is odd that they have black button eyes.

Her other parents treat her warmly and gives her everything she wants which makes Caroline feels so homey and wish that this is her real home. But, everything is just lies so that Coraline's soul can be kept by her other mother without her knowing it. After several rebellious actions that Caroline shows to the other mother, it happens that she turns out into a huge scary looking spider and kidnaps her parents. Knowing that doesnt turns Coraline down, instead she is becoming even stronger and save both of her beloved parents.

During the first couple of minutes I watched this film, in my opinion theres nothing special about it. Just after the scene when she enters the secret passage, I know that something interesting is gonna happen. I felt the tense when finally Coraline realises that the other mother is truely evil and her life is on the line. Overall, this movie is fun to watch, Im in love with Coralines character, she may looks spoiled from outside, but she is mature and strong.

Movie Backgrounds:
I've done several research regarding this movie. Let's take a look
Coraline took couple of years to make, as it first started in 2000 after Selick (the director) convinced the author and the producer that this creepy animation will be a big hit. He says that this is a scary book for kids. If it's animation, I think that it takes a little of the edge off the worst moments, but it keeps the Grimm's fairy tale quality.

Some changes have been made to the film as two characters called Wylie and Mr. Bobinsky are being added. The reason Wylie is added so that Coraline has someone to talk to in her new environment.
There is a total of 28 animators working at one time which produce around 90-100 seconds animation per week. Deborah Cook, the designer of the smallest costumes in the world has to make at least 30 copies of the same outfit that Coraline wears without loosing even a single detail on it.
