Making sets and props Stop Motion Part 1 (BSA 124)

Making sets and props Stop Motion Part 1

We are given couple of weeks to finish our props and sets. Unlike the process of making the animatic, where each people have their own part to do, we work together in making all the props. In the same time it lightens our work and we actually being able to work even faster. But, since I am in charge of the UI, while Chloe and Megan on the real life sets, we still keep our own concepts and help with one another. After around 80% finished for the game UI, we continued to work on the real life sets, such as the couch (where Zack and Lulu will be sitting on), the TV, the background walls, and the floor. In order to make more realistic appearance especially for the couch, so we headed downstairs to the basement and took couple of red and white fabrics.

1. Making the couch
As seen in the animatic, the couch is gonna be 2 seaters couch with hand arms on both sides. Luckily, we founded several unused foams which is very suitable for the couch. For the couch base and backrest, we use polystyrene and the foams on top of them. So, when Lulu sits later on, we can hear the sound effects clearly. PVA glue is not really strong to stick between the foams and polystyrene, thats why glue gun works the best. Megan actually founded 2 fabric colours, red and white, the red one looks have more rustic appeal and thats the reason we chose to use the red one. After sticking all the fabrics and making sure its strong enough, we started to insert all the pins to build wavey surface. And this is the final result:

2. Making the TV
Actually Chloe was the one who made the TV using thin polystyrene and colour the edge with black marker. On the final part, she added two wires and stick it on the top of the TV which looks like antenna.

3. Wall Backgrounds
Zack main colour will be black, Lulu gonna be pink, the couch is red, so we think green will suit best for the wall colour. Again, I headed downstairs and took quite a long green thick paper and stick it onto the stop motion room walls.
If I set the camera angles position the sets will look like this from far:

4. The floor
To lesser the contrast between all the colour, we decided to use the white fabric we've found. Since the surface is not really smooth, we pin in some nails instead.

5. Back to the UI
The UI takes the most of our time, as there are lots of small details we have to pay attention on. Even after working it for 3 sessions, we still haven't finished it yet. After doing some UI research for the clothing options, I decided to draw simple clothing options and add more details on the character's clothing after been selected. This is the UI sets we have done:

And the process of making it:

I will discuss how to make the amateurs on the next post.
