Image result for heavy metal 1981

This is the 10th week of the second term, as last week we learnt about the animation history between 1975-1980, this time its the year 1980-1985.

1. Canada
Name: Gerald Potterton (director)
Born: 8th March 1931
Works: Heavy Metal
Released: 29th July 1981
Techniques being used: As its title, this animation tells mostly about sci-fi adult stories, such as rock and violence, the animation itself was being made in several different studios with rotoscoping for the human characters.

Name: Nelvana Studio
Founded in: 1971
Works: Rock and Rule
Released: 15th April 1983
Techniques being used: Tells the story on the era when humans dont have the power to rule and have been taken over by mutant animals. In my opinion, the animation style is pretty similar to Heavy metal, (rock style).

Name: Richard Condie
Born: 24th October 1942
Works: The Big Snit
Techniques being used: A simple yet interesting animation, the outline work of the characters is very wavey, but it has a normal background. The story tells about a couple who are involved in conflict after playing word games and finally get reconcilled together in heaven. I like the story, it's not too complicated and overall you can get what is the story about.

2. France
Name: Paul Grimault
Born: 23rd March 1905
Died: 29th March 1994
Works: The Shepherdess and the Chimneysweep, The King and the Mocking Bird
Released: 1980
Techniques being used: Grimault is known for his unique style in animation which is satirical and nature based.

3. UK
Name: Dianne Jackson
Born: 28th July 1941
Works: The Snowman
Released: 26th December 1982
Techniques being used: The colouring style is very cartoony and looks like mostly crayon based. This animation has been nominated for 1983 Academy Award as the best animated short film.

Name: Cosgrove Hall Productions (British animation studio founded by Brian Cosgrove and Mark Hall)
Born: 1976
Works: The Wind in the Willows
Released: 27th December 1983
Techniques being used: Stop motion animation and has published 52 episodes TV series which was released on 19 June 1990 for the final episode.

Name: Gerald Scarfe
Founded: 1 June 1936
Works: Pink Floyds in the film The Wall
Techniques being used: This movie is directed by Alan Parker and animated by Gerald Scarfe which tells the story of a rocker called Pink who suffers a great depression after his father's death. Pink is trying to construct a metaphorical wall to protect himself from everything surrounds him, including his emotional state which is unstable. As the story involves about rock and music, this film has the same theme as Heavy Metal and Rock and Rule, but focusing more on the character's personal life.

4. UK/USA
Name: John Halas
Born: 16th April 1912
Died: 21st January 1995
Works: Dilemma (1981)
Techniques being used: This short 10 minutes movie is claimed to be the first CGI  movie in the world. The story mostly tells about things and characters changing forms. It starts with a pendulum clock which drags the story to the universe, then a human character, and so on and so on. Apart from its animation, the story is extremely confusing for me.

5. Canada/Germany
Name: Frederic Back
Born: 8th April 1924
Died: 24th December 2013
Works: Crac!
Techniques being used: Pastel colour and its shading are his speciality, which we can see in his previous animation as well called Illusion. Crac! tells the story of a young man who make a rocking chair from a wood that he found in the forest which is able to change his life. After he finished making the chair, he finds his love, they are blessed with a child and live happily ever after with their family and neighbours.

6. Czech Republic
Name: Jan Svankmajer
Born: 4th September 1934
Works: Dimensions of Dialogue (1982)
Techniques being used: He is using cooking utensils and food to make his animation which looks more like stop motion.

7. UK/Canada
Name: Steve Baron
Born: 4th May 1956
Works: Money for Nothing (1985) and Take on Me (1985)
Techniques being used: Both of his movies have the similarities of the combination between two worlds, the real world and the animation or the comic.
