The History of World Animation 1950-1965 (BSA 106)

World Animation History (1950-1965)

Hi Guys! Before I have discussed the history of world animation between 1930-1950, and today I'll talk about the one in the 1950s - 1960s. There are 9 countries that I'm going to make the summary of :)

1. Yugoslavia
Name of film maker/studio : Duga Film Studio
Name of film/animation : The Big Meeting (1951)

The animation was made to celebrate Yugoslavian identity back then.

2. United Kingdom
Name of film maker/studio : Halas and Batchelor
Name of film/animation : Animal Farm (1954)

It is the first British animated feature that got a general release. The animation is based George Orwell novel which targeting mainly on adult audiences.

Name of film maker/studio : Bob Godfrey
Name of film/animation : Do It For Yourself Cartoon Kit (1961)

It is a cutout animation with humour. Considered as lo-fi animation.

3. Hungary/USA 
Name of film maker/studio : George Pal
Name of film/animation : Tom Thumb (1958)

The animation used several giant sets, superimposition, and stop-frame animation which won Oscar for best special effects in 1959.

4. Czech Republic
Name of film maker/studio : Karel Zeman
Name of film/animation : The Fabulous World of Jules Verne (1958)

It is a combination between stop-frame animation and live action.

5. Japan
Name of film maker/studio : Taiji Yabushita
Name of film/animation : Legend of The White Snake (1958)

Legend of The White Snake is the first Japanese full length animated film in full colour. Style of the animation is regarded as the roots of  anime movies now days.

Name of film maker/studio : Osamu Tezuka
Name of film/animation : Astro Boy (1963)

The manga was first created in 1952 which is inspired by Pinocchio.

6. China
Name of film maker/studio : Wan Laiming
Name of film/animation : Havoc in Heaven (1961 & 1964)

The animation is based on Buddhist traditional tale about Monkey King. (I watched this a lot when I was small).

7. Canada
Name of film maker/studio : Norman McLaren
Name of film/animation : Neighbours (1952)

It used a lot of effects and some of the killing scenes are taken out for Oscar submission. This short film won an Oscar for documentary.

8. Croatia
Name of film maker/studio : Zagreb Film
Name of film/animation : Samac (1958) (Samac means alone)

Won a prize at Venice Film Festival. (I watched this during class, and I'm quite confused haha:))

Name of film maker/studio : Dusan Vukotic and Zagreb Film
Name of film/animation : Surogat (1961)

It is the first animated short film that won Oscar which made out of USA. The story is about mans surreal attempts to show off his gadgets at the beach.  

9. Russia
Name of film maker/studio : Fyodor Khitruk
Name of film/animation : Story of One Crime (1962)

The film opens the door for a new generation of Russian animators to make modern, grownup films containing irony, social satire and original ideas.
